Veneers are a popular choice for many people looking to enhance the appearance of their teeth. They can correct a wide range of imperfections and last for decades, but like any other dental treatment, it’s helpful to learn about potential side effects. One common side effect is a temporary increased tooth sensitivity. Read on to discover why you may have some more tooth sensitivity after getting veneers and ways to handle it.

Why Are My Teeth Sensitive After Getting Veneers?

Before veneers can be placed, your teeth have to be prepared. Your dentist will shave off about half a millimeter of your enamel to ensure your veneers look natural and bond effectively to your teeth. Otherwise, your veneers would not sit flush with the rest of your pearly whites, making them look and feel bulky.

Removing a thin layer of enamel on your teeth can lead to increased sensitivity because it lightly exposes the dentin. This underlayer has small tubules that lead down to the nerve of the tooth. These tubules are sensitive to temperature, so hot or cold things can cause some discomfort.

Rest assured, the veneers will act as a strong shield for your teeth, just like your natural enamel did. It’s normal to experience minor tooth sensitivity as your teeth adjust to the temporary and permanent set, but it’s manageable and short-lived!

How Can I Reduce Tooth Sensitivity?

When dealing with tooth sensitivity, there are some things you can do to help with it! You can:

  • Watch What You Eat and Drink: Being more mindful about what you consume can make dealing with sensitive teeth easier. Anything hot, cold, acidic, or even overly sweet can irritate them. You can try switching to room-temperature beverages and adjusting your diet for a few days to avoid increased sensitivity! It’s also recommended to avoid hard or sticky foods while wearing your temporary veneers, as they can dislodge the set.
  • Rinse with Saltwater: This can help reduce the discomfort and swelling you may experience.
  • Take a Mild Pain Reliever: Over-the-counter medications can help alleviate soreness and sensitivity after getting veneers. You can ask your dentist about which ones they recommend, but always read the label and follow dosage instructions!
  • Use a Sensitive Teeth Toothpaste: Also known as desensitizing toothpaste, it contains special ingredients that help fight against tooth sensitivity. However, be sure to avoid whitening or overly abrasive toothpastes, as these can damage your veneers and even make your teeth more sensitive!

Feeling some tooth sensitivity after veneers is entirely normal. The good news is that it is minimal and temporary! By following your dentist’s instructions and a few helpful tips, you will get past your sensitivity and focus on your brand-new smile in no time.
