Dental implants are in a class of their own when it comes to replacing missing teeth! If you’ve recently talked with your dentist about implants and they’ve cleared you to receive them, you’re probably looking forward to having a brighter and healthier smile. That said, you might still have some questions about the procedure and aren’t sure what to expect. Here are four tips to help you prepare for dental implant surgery in Marshall.

1. Ask Questions Beforehand

As a patient, you have the right to fully understand the procedure that you’re about to receive; and the process isn’t always very cut-and-dry! Sometimes a patient might need a little prep work done, such as a bone graft or tooth extraction. Other times, something like gum disease might need to be treated first. In any case, if you have any questions about the actual surgery, the recovery process, or the implants themselves, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist or oral surgeon for clarification. They are an expert on the subject and can easily put any initial concerns you might have to rest.

2. Follow Instructions Carefully

Depending on the specifics of your treatment, you will be provided with pre-op instructions to follow. It’s crucial that you follow these guidelines closely, so you don’t risk jeopardizing your implants or oral health. For example, you might be asked to refrain from eating or drinking the night before surgery if you’re going to receive IV sedation. Often, you’ll also have to take medication after the surgery and avoid certain foods and beverages. Of course, you’ll also want to take care of your implants once they’re healed—you’ll be expected to keep them clean, too!

3. Plan Ahead

Consider what you might need, both in terms of assistance and specific items. If you’re going to need a ride home after the procedure or someone to keep an eye on you and help you out, be sure to make the proper arrangements. You should also consider having all the necessary supplies, including soft-foods and plenty of water; you probably won’t feel up for grocery shopping after your surgery!

4. Seek Help When You Need It

Your body is going to need plenty of rest to recover from your dental implant surgery; that said, don’t be afraid to ask for help! It’s recommended to have someone stay with you after the procedure for a few hours to monitor your health. It’s also wise to call your dentist or oral surgeon if you begin experiencing any problems or need help. You’ll be back to normal after a couple of days, but don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance if you need it.

Dental implants can completely change your smile and your life; but their success depends on your willingness to take care of them! That said, knowing what to expect going into the process can ensure that your recovery is smooth, and your implants can ultimately do their job.
